Asscher Cut Diamonds

The Asscher cut diamond is a variety of step cut diamond that epitomizes 1920s glamour. Referred to as the ‘square emerald cut’ by gem laboratories, the Asscher cut makes an elegant statement in a diamond engagement ring, but also looks fantastic set in wedding rings, eternity rings, diamond earrings, tennis bracelets and diamond pendants. The Asscher cut is perfect for those who love the square shape of the princess cut, but are after a stylish geometric appearance. Browse our selection of IGI, HRD and GIA certified square emerald cut diamonds and diamond rings.

Asscher Cut Diamond

Unlike the princess cut, the Asscher cut has a step formation. This means that the cut comprises a table facet surrounded by rectangular crown facets and cropped corners. The original Asscher cut has 58 facets, and the Royal Asscher cut has 74 facets.

The Asscher cut is the perfect cut to show off a diamond with an exceptional clarity grade. Much like the emerald cut, the table facet offers an unobstructed view into the heart of the diamond that is particularly well suited to stones with an eye-clean clarity. Stones with a clarity grading of SI1 and above will display a mesmerizing array of concentric square shapes through the table facet, famously referred to as the ‘hall of mirrors’ effect.

The Asscher cut diamond was first produced in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of Holland. This company was famed for cutting the 3,106ct Cullinan diamond, the largest gem quality rough diamond ever found! Following its release, the Asscher cut soared to popularity in the 1920s. The geometric, clean lines of the cut blended perfectly with the chic Art Deco jewellery that was being made and worn in the early 20th Century. More recently, the Asscher cut has made a comeback, with many ladies wanting to encapsulate that timeless Great Gatsby style in their engagement rings.

If you need more convincing about the elegance and style of the Asscher cut, the Queen of jewellery herself Elizabeth Taylor was the proud owner of one. Her engagement ring from Richard Burton was a 33.19ct Asscher cut with tapered baguette cut diamond shoulders that she lovingly called ‘my baby!’ If you are after a stone with unrivalled style, elegance and clarity, opt for an Asscher.
